This long-standing company was founded in the middle of the 20th century by John K. Hanson, who initially sought to improve his town, Forest City, Iowa. He asked an existing California-based travel trailer manufacturer, Modernistic Industries, to open a factory in Forest City to help it grow by bolstering its economy. A small group of Midwesterners headed by Hanson bought the operation soon after. Winnebago Industries got its name in 1960.
The 001 was the company’s first original motorhome, built to be affordable for families who wanted to travel on a budget. Released in 1966, this initial success helped the company to grow exponentially. They made several advances in RV designs, including Thermo-Panel insulated walls that better regulated interior temperatures to create a more comfortable living space.
