Being prepared for a trip isn’t just about the packing and attraction choosing and the fun stuff. It’s also about making sure you’re going to be ready for any challenge that may come up when you’re far from home and this includes emergencies. Breakdowns on the side of the road can be stressful and frustrating and if you don’t have a plan in place, you’re probably going to be left stranded. That’s why Kerrville RV has taken some time to outline a good roadside repair plan in case you don’t have one ready to go. If you need additional help with this, or if you still need the RV to travel around in, stop by our location serving San Antonio, Austin, Boerne, and Georgetown, Texas.

Inspect your RV Ahead of Time

Of course, the best way to handle emergencies is to keep them from happening in the first place. This means you’ll want to do a thorough inspection of your RV before you roll out. Check every nook and cranny from top to bottom, including tires, ventilation, slide-outs, and any other moving parts that may need some repairs while you’re still close to home. If you own a motorhome, then you’ll want to check all the fluids in your engine and make sure it’s ready for the long haul. We recommend doing this well in advance of the big day so if you do run into problems, you can get them taken care of without eating into vacation time.

Roadside Assistance

There are a lot of RV repairs that probably won’t be fixable from the road. It’s just like if you’re driving your car and it breaks down. Maybe you can change a tire, but a dead battery is a dead battery. When this happens to your car, you might call your trusted roadside assistance agency to send help. The same goes for RVs. If you let your prefered agency know that you either own an RV or are going on an RV trip, they’ll be ready to send the right kind of help for a rig your size.

Budget for Emergencies

If your RV does need to be towed somewhere else, you might be looking at some maintenance fees. If you blow all your money on seeing all the best attractions or the most expensive campgrounds, then you’re not going to have the funds you need to pay off your maintenance bill and you might find yourself stranded or having to make some tough financial decisions. Avoid this altogether by setting aside some money specifically for emergency situations. This can come in handy in any emergency situation, but maintenance repairs can quickly climb in price, so make sure you set aside a significant chunk of money to keep you covered.

Bring the Right Tools

If you are a hands on type of person, then there might be a lot of on the road repairs that you’re willing to take care of. But without the right tools, you’ll be back to calling roadside assistance to come to your aid, so make sure you’re all geared up before leaving home. At the very least, you’ll want a spare tire and jack, but if you’re a little more skilled, you might also want a hacksaw, vice grips, side cutter pliers, wire strippers and other tools for electrical fixes, as well as some classic duct tape. Whatever fixes you can handle, make sure you’ve got the right tools to handle it, and don’t forget to consult your owner’s manual beforehand.

Hopefully this gets you started, but as we mentioned, that pre-trip inspection is important. If you notice that there’s a part of your RV that needs attending to before you hit the road, contact the Kerrville RV service department and one of our skilled technicians will help fix all your RV repairs.
